I'm a bit late to writing on this article. It's incredibly likely that everyone who wants to hear about this already has. I'll keep the summary short. But I do have some news about this trade. So I'm a bit glad I waited. To the important part, Chicho Arango was traded to San Jose for a package totalling 1.4 Million Dollars in GAM along with a 2026 International Roster slot. Last year he tied our season scoring record at 17 before being suspended. After which, he scored zero goals.
Today I was given the opportunity to speak with Pablo and technical director Kurt Schmid. Some other members of media asked some incredible questions. This was my first time using recording software to record everything so I did not figure out how to record 2 strings of audio at the same time and only got my own audio instead of the media's accidentally. I apologize for this and if there is a next time, I will get it sorted. Everything I will be saying now will be paraphrased, but I encourage you to check out some other members of media who have posted clips. Caleb Turner specifically handled a lot of the Chicho talk (@calebturner). Kurt also went on to talk to Spence Checketts about the move for the first 5 minutes of the clip below.
The question was obviously asked "Why did Chicho leave. Why was the number he left for so low after a good year" (paraphrased). It became very clear to me that Chicho asked to leave. We were not told exactly what happened to Chicho, but at some point Chicho asked to leave the city. The club obliged and found the best option for Chicho and the club, which happened to be San Jose. This was not something that happened in the last week. The club has known this was coming. I have heard rumors as far as a month ago that Chicho wanted to go home to Colombia. That seems likely to be a valid rumor at this point.
The transfer value is a bit lower than what you'd hope for. It was also discussed on the radio that Chicho's form dropped after the suspension. Kurt was very clear to not say any specifics. Kurt did not downplay the drop in form though. Chicho scored 17 goals in 20 games. Then he got suspended and scored nothing the rest of the year. Our feelings are valid, and if we feel like somethings up, so will any suitor. I think this along with the fact that Chicho asked to leave us gave us very little leverage in negotiations, resulting in a lower transfer fee.
The truth is, anything can happen. They also did say they're going to buy a striker. The quality of that striker is unknown.
Best case scenario: We spend 10 million dollars on a DP striker. Then we spend the 700,000 GAM and bring in a quality intra-league right back. This would be a massive move in the right direction.
Worst case scenario: We promote another player on the roster to a DP. We spend the 700,000 GAM on a bunch of players that don't make an impact. This would mean we have a significantly worse roster than we did a week ago.
It's likely we're somewhere in the middle. Bookmark the website and follow the transfer window with me to find out what happens.
